Traditional Singaporean coffee shop serving authentic kaya toast and Nanyang coffee since 1944
Ya Kun Kaya Toast is a legendary Singaporean institution that has been serving traditional kaya toast since 1944. Founded by Loi Ah Koon, a 15-year-old Chinese immigrant who arrived in Singapore in 1926, this humble coffeestall has evolved into a cultural icon that the Singapore Tourism Board actively promotes as a tourist attraction.
The story began when Ah Koon's wife suggested cutting each slice of bread in half and combining the charcoal-grilled toast with her homemade kaya spread. This innovation became their signature dish and helped establish kaya toast as a beloved Singaporean breakfast tradition. The dish represents the Hainanese immigrant experience, as kaya was originally created as a local alternative to Western fruit jams.
Today, Ya Kun Kaya Toast operates over 40 Singaporean outlets and more than 30 international locations across seven countries. The traditional breakfast experience includes crispy kaya toast paired with butter, accompanied by aromatic coffee and two perfectly runny soft-boiled eggs served with dark soy sauce and white pepper. In 2021, kaya toast was featured on commemorative coins by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, cementing its status as an integral part of Singapore's UNESCO-recognized hawker culture.

Ya Kun Signature Kaya Toast with Butter Set
A distinctive and delightful traditional set, often served with soft-boiled eggs and Nanyang-brewed coffee or tea.
"The experience was noisy. Customers were waiting to collect their orders, but the staff kept beeping the buzzer repeatedly, which made the environment less than ideal for a relaxing breakfast. Customers were annoyed and gave feedback to the staff, but she ignored them and continued her behavior. The staff member in the picture appears to be the stall manager."

Extremely disappointing experience. I ordered something as basic as egg and bread, yet it took more than 30 minutes to arrive. I waited 30 minutes just for an overboiled egg! The place was nearly empty, so there was absolutely no excuse for such a delay. The staff were slow and seemed completely indifferent, moving at their own pace with zero sense of urgency. This kind of service is unacceptable. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Came here at 6:15 pm and ordered some biscuits. It took them over 20 minutes to put butter and kaya on the biscuits, even though the place was almost empty. All the best during peak time.

The shop was half empty, and we still had to wait 20 minutes for a plate of cream crackers with butter and kaya. Ridiculous. We're never coming back again.

"Extremely difficult to find. I walked all over the compound and it turned out to be in the other building. But that's just my fault since the place is so new. It's bright, clean, and spacious, and the air conditioning is good."

The place is conveniently located in the mall. It's probably one of the larger Ya Kun stores I've come across. It's rather spacious and clean. The service crew was polite and friendly. As it's a new store, there were times when they were a bit unsure of what exactly to do. For instance, they forgot to serve the eggs after the drink was made. However, they quickly offered to serve the eggs to me instead of making me wait, which was a good response. I believe it should get better over time.

Took a leisurely walk at Punggol Coast Mall and found a somewhat hidden YaKun Toast alongside the boardwalk. The TehO and KopiO are nicely brewed and aromatic. I especially liked the TehO because there wasn't any tannin aftertaste. The French Toast is perfectly coated with egg, and it goes really well with the kaya dip. The service staff, DuYi, was polite, sweet, patient, and attentive. It was the first time I've received such wonderful service from a kopi outlet.

Spacious, friendly staff. Not too crowded for now.
