Major Public Transport Upgrade Coming to Punggol Area

Residents in the Punggol district are set to experience improved public transport options with the upcoming launch of a new bus interchange facility at Punggol Coast. This significant development is scheduled to begin operations on June 29.

The new interchange is strategically designed for convenient commuter transfers, offering direct integration with the Punggol Coast MRT station (which commenced services in December of the previous year) and a recently opened shopping mall in the vicinity that welcomed patrons in March.

Initial Service Changes and Route Enhancements

To begin, two key bus services, identified as routes 34 and 117 (along with its variant 117M), will be relocated from the existing Punggol Central bus interchange to this new, more northerly hub. The new facility boasts the capacity to handle up to ten distinct bus services.

This shift will also see an expansion of the coverage for these two bus routes:

  • Bus service 117 will extend its reach to include four additional pairs of stops, servicing locations near educational institutions and a community lifestyle hub.
  • Bus service 34 will add seven new stops on its journey from Punggol Coast towards Punggol Central, and eight more on its return trip.

According to transport authorities, these changes aim to significantly boost connectivity within the Punggol town. Residents in areas like Sumang Walk and Sentul Crescent will gain direct bus connections to key destinations, including the airport, Tampines, and Yishun.

Future Plans for Punggol's Transport Network

Officials have indicated that further enhancements are planned. New bus services are being considered for operation out of the Punggol Coast interchange. A new city direct service is also slated to be introduced, providing Punggol residents with a direct link to the city center during peak travel times, supplementing the existing city direct services already serving the area.

The transport authority has stated that additional bus routes and service improvements in the north-eastern region will be introduced progressively, aligning with the completion of new residential and commercial developments in Punggol.

A Modern Integrated Transport Hub

Located within the Punggol Digital District, this new bus interchange will mark the nation's 15th integrated transport hub (ITH). These ITHs are characterized by their air-conditioned environments and direct links to MRT stations and adjacent retail centers. The operational management of this new hub will be handled by one of the main public transport operators, which also manages the existing Punggol interchange and another recently opened ITH in Pasir Ris.

Preparations for the launch are well underway. The operating company has been extensively training its driving staff to familiarize them with the new interchange layout and the revised route for service 34. Information regarding the service extensions will be made available at relevant bus stops, interchanges, and through online channels. Customer service personnel are also undergoing training to assist passengers at the new facility.

Designed for Commuter Comfort and Inclusivity

The new interchange has been designed with a strong focus on passenger needs. It will feature a range of inclusive amenities, such as wheelchair-accessible restrooms, a dedicated baby care room, and a special commuter care room for individuals who may require a quiet and calm environment.

All entrances to the facility will be barrier-free. Additionally, dedicated priority queue zones with seating will be available at all bus boarding berths. The design also incorporates facilities for public transport staff, including a canteen and a lounge area. Sustainability has also been a key consideration, with energy-saving features like LED lighting, an efficient air-conditioning system, water-conserving taps, and motion-sensor lighting being implemented.

Dual Interchange Strategy for Punggol

With the opening of this new ITH, Punggol town will benefit from having two bus interchanges. Officials have clarified that the existing Punggol Central interchange, despite previous speculation about its temporary nature, will continue to operate. Plans are in place to refurbish this older facility to ensure it continues to serve residents effectively.

Local representatives have emphasized the importance of having two well-connected bus interchanges linked to the MRT and LRT systems. This dual-hub strategy is seen as crucial for improving travel both within the expansive Punggol town and for journeys to other parts of the island. The Teck Lee LRT station is also conveniently located within walking distance of the new Punggol Coast interchange. The enhanced connectivity provided by this new infrastructure has been eagerly anticipated by local residents, and further service expansions are expected in the future.
