Job Description

Position Requirements

  • Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Maths.
  • Certification: Valid teaching certification from a recognized institution or authority.
  • Responsibility: Must showcase a track record of responsibility, both in professional settings and in interactions with students.
  • Understanding of Duty of Care: Recognize the importance of duty of care in an educational setting and act accordingly to ensure the well-being of students.

Position Demands

Core Responsibility

The primary duty of the teacher is to facilitate learning, impart knowledge, and guide students towards academic and personal success. Teachers are responsible for creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, supports student well-being, and prepares students for the next stages of their academic and personal journeys.


Working Relationships & Accountability

· reporting to and working with the Department Head on all matters concerning the teaching and development of the subject, matters of pastoral care and resources;

· working with the IGCSE/DP Coordinator(s) on all curriculum and teaching and learning related matters, the Dean of Students on matters related to pastoral care and student well-being, and to the CAS Coordinator in planning and/or supervising in and after school activities;

· cooperating with other members of the faculty, regarding the development of academic planning, and good practices; liaising with other members of staff to manage the work of the students;

· Working with the University Counselors in providing timely predicted grades and references;

· Fostering a trusting, respectful and productive relationship with students that aids the learning process;

· Regularly communicating with parents/guardians about student progress, behavior and any concerns or issues;

· Working with external educational and well-being agencies as needed for student support;

· keeping external contacts with professional associations, universities and libraries appropriate.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Main duties include the following domains (although it is not an exhaustive list):


Teaching and Learning

• Organize the classroom and learning resources as per the School’s agreements, valuing all areas of the curriculum;

• Update the syllabi, weekly planning documents and unit plans for the delivery of relevant syllabi;

• Design, plan, and implement lessons that adhere to the curriculum standards, and promote active learning experiences and are student centred;

• Identify, utilize, and sometimes create teaching aids and resources to enhance the learning experience;

• Create and maintain displays to encourage a positive and valued learning environment inline with Staff Handbook and the School calendar;

• Teach according to the educational needs, abilities and achievement of the individual students and groups of students, differentiating for and catering to the needs of the whole ability range within the class;

• Keep up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum;

• Evaluates regularly students’ progress in compliance with the Assessment Policy and calendar;

• Mark student work and provide timely feedback (written in positive and formal language) which also target to further student attainment and achievement;

• Source at least one external learning experience (educational visits, professional visitors) to enhance students learning each semester;

• Complete written reports to parents as per the School’s guidelines;

• Maintain discipline, ensuring that the learning environment is respectful and inclusive;

• Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual students or groups of students;

• Run effective classrooms that are well‐managed and where students are actively participating and engaged in their learning;

• Register and monitor the attendance of students.


Professional Practice

• Advise and co-operate with the pedagogical leadership team and other teachers in the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral care arrangements;

• Ensure high standards of professional practice and quality of teaching and learning;

• Participate in reciprocal peer review and observation of class teaching practice by the pedagogical leadership team;

• Participate actively in inset training days and courses as well as in continuing professional development opportunities to improve teaching skills and subject matter expertise;

• Develop and implement student Individual Educational Plan (IEP) in liaison with Additional Needs Coordinator (when needed);

• Develop student support plans for each failing student with regular review;

• Participate in and contribute to IEP conferences and review collaborating with parents, counsellors, grade coordinator, and other professionals/stakeholders working with the student.


Pastoral

• Follow school safeguarding rules and regulations in fostering a safe school for all students;

• Maintain good order and discipline amongst students, safeguarding their health and safety at all times;

• Maintain discipline through use of positive reinforcement in line with School agreements;

• Do break and lunch duties as per the School duty rota following the School agreements;

• Facilitate co-curricular activities (CCAs) at least once every week;

• Prepare and organises Grade level performances or productions as per the School calendar;.


Communication


Communicate with parents as per School agreements and requests on an on-going basis concerning their child’s progress, interests and needs;

• Meet with parents regularly when needed to discuss improvement plan and support needed from home;

• Attend and provide feedback to parents on students’ progress at parent teacher conferences and student-led conferences;

• Keep parents informed of school events and send out Friday communication;

• Update Seesaw regularly and in line with School agreements and the calendar;

• Read and follow the daily/weekly update from the Head of School.


Child Protection

Safety: Ensure a safe classroom environment, free from hazards, and be aware of emergency protocols;

Emotional Well-being: Recognize signs of distress, abuse, or other issues that might affect a child's emotional and physical well-being;

Reporting: Understand and adhere to mandatory reporting laws, ensuring that any concerns about a student's safety or well-being are promptly and properly reported to the appropriate parties;

Training: Regularly update knowledge on child protection policies and practices;

Confidentiality: Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information related to students unless disclosure is necessary for the safety of the child or as required by law.


Essential Agreements

• Foster a safe learning space for all students at OWIS;

• Nurture (and role model) a culture which promotes lifelong learning and reflection; and reflective practitioners;

• Motivate and support students in achieving their potential;

• Be an effective member of teaching and learning team by efficiently carrying out processes that uphold the academic standards of the school, such as maintaining up-to-date records of student learning programs and meeting deadlines within the school regarding documentation;

• Be familiar with and comply with all Emergency Evacuation procedures;

• Comply with all agreements and procedures as per the Staff Handbook;

• Carry out any additional duties as assigned by the Head of School, in line with the position.


Position Specific

• Teachers are expected to have a maximum of 80% contact time including any duties assigned by the school or section head, including hallway duties, canteen supervisions, etc.;

• Teachers are expected to attend and/or present at least one Open Day even once every semester;

• Teachers are expected to write one article to be published in the school newsletter every two months (quarterly);

• Attend all staff meetings, workshops, courses, school events, curriculum evenings, information evenings, etc. which may take place on weekends or in the evenings;

• Participate in school improvement committees;

• Organize one main school event in the academic calendar, e.g., book week, eco week, etc.;

• Supervise extended essays, student exhibitions, sporting and social events;

• Stay for 30 minutes after work twice a week to support students who are failing or those who need support to further improve;

• Inform appropriate personal when being late to work, leaving early or absent, and provide necessary learning material to make sure students are engaged in their learning (school hours);

• compile a full set of emergency lessons for use by a cover teacher;

• attend punctually all Staff, Faculty and Departmental meetings, and be prompt to classes;

• use technology to facilitate teaching and learning in line with the school expectations;

• maintain a smart casual standard of dress as outlined in the school’s dress code.
