Associate Professor (High Voltage Power Electronics and System Design)

SIT offers multi-disciplinary engineering degree programmes that are closely aligned with Singapore’s key economic growth sectors. These include aerospace, civil, electrical power, marine, mechanical, land transport, robotics, and systems engineering. Many of these programmes are first of their kind in Singapore, specialised degree programmes with a strong emphasis on skills mastery through close collaboration with industry partners.

The Engineering Cluster has mapped its cluster research capability and geared research efforts in the areas of energy, infrastructure, and sustainability. These are key areas that are of utmost importance to the development and future of Singapore and the region.

The SIT Engineering Cluster is made up of a diverse mix of subject-area experts who have deep industry experience and specialised domain knowledge. Applied research is at the forefront of SIT's academic pursuits to not only bring benefits to the industry but also enables faculty members to bring real-world problems into their teaching. Most of Engineering's faculty members are active in industry-facing applied research and innovation activities, producing solutions that make our research impact felt through industry and community transformation.

The electrical power engineering sector in Singapore is thriving, supported by a robust infrastructure and bolstered by strategic initiatives for clean, resilient and sustainable energy sources.

1. Energy Sector:

• Singapore aims to diversify her energy sources and increase the sustainability of power supply, while ensuring energy security and cost-competitiveness through a “four switches” approach consisting of natural gas, solar, regional power grids and low-carbon alternatives.
• To support grid interconnections with regional power grids, HVDC subsea cables offer efficiency and performance advantages over traditional HVAC solutions.
• The development of regional power grid interconnections to Singapore opens up development and standardisation opportunities for HVDC substation design, control and protection and integration with the existing power grid

2. Electrical Power Engineering:

• The Singapore Green Plan and Singapore Maritime Decarbonisation Plan 2030 have committed to an aggressive electrification plan for land and marine transportation, driving a rapid expansion of grid capacity and increasing the complexity of grid operations and planning.
• To support the increased grid demand while enhancing grid resilience and reliability, Singapore is complementing the increased deployment of renewable energy sources, energy storage and integration of microgrids with advanced automation, control systems, sensors, digital asset twins and demand response programmes.
• The ability to accelerate the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles such as buses and trailers relies on the fast and safe adoption and integration of new high-power electrical engineering technologies into existing distribution infrastructure.
• Singapore has 4 functional microgrids, and SIT Punggol campus hosts Singapore’s First Experimental Urban Microgrid testbed, allowing energy trading, DC microgrid, demand response management, energy storage and power electronics-related experimentation to address these challenges and develop cost-effective and sustainable solutions.

3. Installation, Operation and Maintenance Pract ices for Modern Power Grids:

• As the power grid transforms, new standards and codes of practice for the design, installation, operations, and maintenance of a modern AC / DC power distribution system with various renewable energy sources, energy storage, and electric vehicles will be required.
• To accelerate the adoption of full electric harbour crafts, Singapore has begun developing shore-to-ship charging infrastructure standards to ensure interoperability and safe operations for different harbour crafts.
• The drive towards electrification and the rapid expansion of modern distribution systems, coupled with a global shortage of skilled electrical power engineers, necessitate intelligent health monitoring and automated operations to ensure an efficient, reliable and resilient power system.

Singapore is always looking ahead to plan, adapt, and implement to overcome the of resiliency challenges of the energy sector and power grid. Government agencies and industry continue to adapt, innovate, and contribute significantly to Singapore’s growth.

SIT is well-positioned to educate and train talent and equip them with industry-relevant skillsets. We offer complementary undergraduate programmes in Electrical Power Engineering; Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Mechatronics Systems and Robotics Systems that draw upon the expertise from Singapore and from our overseas university partners (Newcastle University, University of Glasgow, and DigiPen Institute of Technology).
